March was named after the Roman god of war, Mars, also known as Ares in Greek mythology and Tiu/Tiw in Teutonic or Germanic mythology.

Along with the notorious Bacchanalia of the Greek god Dionysus on March 16th, March is known for its abundant observations of the vernal equinox, which is celebrated in various cultures on March 20th, 21st or 22nd. This latter day was known in ancient times for its important festival of the goddess Cybele—the Great Mother—which began on March 22nd and ended on the 27th. As stated by Rev. Alexander Roberts in The Ante-Nicene Fathers (VI, 496):
